HonorHonorary Degrees Nomination Materials Information

Honorary Degree Nomination Materials

The Committee on Honorary Degrees strongly encourages you to nominate individuals to receive an honorary degree from The Ohio State University. Recognition of outstanding scholars, artists, and leaders demonstrates Ohio State's continuing commitment and support of excellence.

Selected individuals are recognized at any of the four commencements held each year. The honorary degree gives a department or college an opportunity to acknowledge individuals in their field who have made outstanding contributions to their profession and to bring them to the attention of our University. Because the designation of nominees derives almost entirely from the faculty, we need your participation in this process.

We also suggest that when departments are planning to invite distinguished individuals to campus that they consider nominating that individual for an honorary degree.

We are looking for individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to human understanding. Most recipients should be from the academic world, but non-academic individuals will be considered if they have added a significantly new dimension to society or the world's well-being. Although individuals currently employed by Ohio State are not eligible, persons who have had some relationship with this University are welcome.

To encourage proposals, our committee has adopted a more streamlined nomination process. You may nominate a person for an honorary degree by writing a letter to the committee describing the person's specific contributions. Enclose a curriculum vitae or biographical statement from a published source (e.g., Who's Who) with your nomination. If the committee concludes that the candidate is a strong contender, it will provide you with specific information to complete the nomination process. The committee will respond to your nomination in a timely manner.
